Jim Dickinson began his traffic career on the construction side installing traffic signals. He moved over to the engineering side of traffic in 1981 and worked as a consulting traffic engineer for 25 years. In 2006, he joined the City of West Des Moines as Traffic Engineer. Since then, West Des Moines has expanded its fiber optic network to include all 119 signalized intersections, installation of 12 GRIDSMART systems, installation of over 103 PTZ cameras to monitor traffic from the city’s Traffic Operations Center, and installation of battery backup units at all signalized intersections. Adaptive traffic signal control technology has been installed at 94 signalized intersections on ten major corridors in the city since 2011.
